Lila sat on her bed and stared out of her window as she brushed out her hair. She glanced over at the painting on her wall. She stood and walked over to stare at it. She had done this often in the past few months; imagining over and over how Asher had looked as he painted her birthday present. Would he have been solemn? Would he have smiled when he painted the twins? Would his eyes soften when he painted her? Would they become that liquid gold color that she loved so much? Would he have whispered her name in his French accent? In the way that made her tremor?

“You should have painted yourself into it,” Lila whispered.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. Lila turned toward it as Riana stepped in. The little girl stared at the floor for a moment. Her expression was downcast.

“Did you and Gabriel have a fight?”

Riana nodded. “I was wondering if you could tell me a story. Maybe by then he won’t be so angry. Or maybe, he will even be asleep.”

“All right. Which one do you want to hear?”

“The one where Asher proposes.”

Lila smiled, “I have never told you that one.”

“Will you be happy if you tell it? Or will you be sad? Because sometimes I peek in here at you and I see you staring at the painting that Asher gave you and you seem happy and sad all at the same time.”

“So you spy on me do you?”

“Me and Gabe do.”

“I’ll tell you a story if you want,” Lila said.

“Oh, good!” Riana took a flying leap and landed on her big sister’s bed. She bounced up and down on her knees, pausing as Lila joined her.

“Lila, when you marry Asher will you be a princess? Asher is French. Can you speak French? Grandma can. If you are going to marry somebody from France then you might want to learn it.”

“You’re right, Riana!” Lila exclaimed. “That is an excellent idea. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before. When Asher comes back for me then I will be prepared.” Lila hugged Riana. “Thank you so much, sweetheart!”

“You’re welcome,” Riana replied, squirming out of Lila’s hug. “But…what did I do?”

“You gave me something to do in preparation for being a queen.”

There was a knock on the door. Lila looked up as her grandmother entered with Gabriel in tow.

“Lila, you look happy.” Grandma said.

“Oh, Grandma, you will just have to help me…”
